\"\"Marx in Hell: The Critique of Political Economy as Katabasis<\/h1>\n

This paper examines one of the many Judeo-Christian allu-
\nsions in Marx\u2019s corpus, his citations of Dante in the \u201c1859
\nPreface\u201d and the preface to the first edition of Capital. It demon-
\nstrates that Marx borrowed key features of Dante\u2019s Inferno for
\nhis own critique of political economy, and that Marx thereby
\nsituated his critical journey through economics as the heir to
\nthe Western tradition of the katabasis, the formative descent
\ninto the underworld. This undermines the dichotomization of
\nreligion and science prevalent in Marxology, and suggests that
\nMarx must be read outside both of these traditional categories.<\/p>\n
